Why business mix matters more than occupancy

A full hotel is not automatically a profitable hotel. Understanding who stays, when they book and what they contribute creates a more useful picture than occupancy alone.

Understand the shape of your demand

Leisure, corporate, group and other segments bring different rates, lead times, costs and operating needs. Examine how they fill the week and the season, then identify where the current mix supports or limits the property.

Consider displacement

Accepting a group may provide useful base demand, but it can also replace higher-contribution bookings on peak nights. Review the whole stay, ancillary revenue, terms and likelihood of alternative demand before making a decision.

Plan for contribution

A considered mix can stabilise demand and make commercial planning more reliable. Compare segments using contribution as well as rate, and account for the operational effort each creates.

Keep the guest proposition in view

Business mix should reinforce the experience and positioning of the hotel. Align revenue, sales and operations so a short-term occupancy target does not undermine longer-term commercial value.
